High Performance New Construction

High Performance New Construction

Contact

The HIGH PERFORMANCE NEW CONSTRUCTION initiative provides design assistance and incentives for building owners and planners who design and implement energy efficient equipment within their new space.

Today, developers, architects, engineers, property owners and tenants within the building industry recognize the significance and positive impact of high performance buildings. It clearly pays to make energy efficiency a key priority when renovating or building new facilities.

There are two types of applications for the High Performance Construction Initiative

-        Engineered Track
-        Custom Track

How Can I Participate?

You can participate in the HIGH PERFORMANCE NEW CONSTRUCTION initiative if you are an eligible distribution-connected company constructing a new building or undergoing a major renovation project.

To qualify, the projects must be in Ontario, comply with the Ontario Building Code (OBC).  Supplementary Standard SB-10 and be intended for commercial, institutional, industrial or multi-residential occupancy. In order to receive incentives for the project, your building must be designed and built to an energy performance that exceeds the minimum required by the relevant building code.

Incentives are available for a variety of energy saving measures, as detailed within the prescriptive and engineered application tracks. The custom application track provides participants the flexibility to submit applications for innovative energy efficient measures not listed within the prescriptive or engineered track.

To get started, determine the type of energy efficiency measures that you will be installing in your project and then decide which application track to apply towards. Make sure that you complete all appropriate forms for the chosen application track before submitting your application. If you require help or additional information, contact us at energyefficiencybusiness@wnhydro.com.

Engineered Track

The engineered track consists of a series of pre-set calculation worksheets that help you estimate reductions in peak demand and/or electricity consumption that apply to the installation of energy-efficient equipment or solutions.

The following measures are eligible under the Engineered Track:

1.    Commercial Interior Lighting
2.    Commercial Exterior Lighting
3.    Unitary AC (i.e. rooftop units and split systems)

Custom Track

The custom application track is suitable for unique or innovative energy efficiency measures that are not included within the prescriptive or engineered tracks. The custom application track can be driven by the building owner, or by a design decision maker such as an architect, engineer or consultant. Custom projects often require more effort and input from the participant, but can result in focused energy savings.

Custom track incentive amounts are calculated based on the incremental energy performance of the participant's new building when compared to a base case building that only complies with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and Supplementary Standard SB-101. Approved building modeling software must be used to compare the energy usage of the participant's new building to the base case building in order to estimate the energy savings and potential incentives.

There are 3 incentive tiers offered within the Custom Track:

Project Incentives:

Project incentives will be based on the lesser of:

(a)   30% of the Eligible Costs; and
(b)   the applicable Tier and corresponding Demand or Energy Savings incentive (whichever is greater) in the Table below:

Tier

For Building Permit Applications Prior to January 1, 2017

For Building Permit Applications On or After January 1, 2017

Custom Incentive

Tier 1

Above Base Case Energy Savings are ≤25%

Above Base Case Energy Savings are ≤10%

$400/kW of verified Demand Savings or $0.05/kWh verified Energy Savings

Tier 2

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >25% and ≤50%

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >10% and ≤25%

$600/kW of verified Demand Savings or $0.075/kWh verified Energy Savings

Tier 3

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >50%

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >25%

$800/kW of verified Demand Savings or $0.1/kWh verified Energy Savings

Modeling Incentives:

Modeling costs are eligible for an incentive amount of up to $10,000. Modeling can be completed by the participant, design decision maker or can be outsourced to a third party.

Design Decision-Maker Incentives:

A design decision maker can be eligible for an incentive based on the applicable Tier and corresponding Demand or Energy Savings incentive (whichever is greater) in the Table below:

Tier

For Building Permit Applications prior to January 1, 2017

For Building Permit Applications on or after January 1, 2017

Design Decision-Maker Incentive

Tier 1

Above Base Case Energy Savings are ≤25%

Above Base Case Energy Savings are ≤10%

$50/kW of verified Demand Savings or $0.00625/kWh verified Energy Savings

Tier 2

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >25% and ≤50%

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >10% and ≤25%

$100/kW of verified Demand Savings or $0.0125/kWh verified Energy Savings

Tier 3

Above Base Case Energy Savings are >50%
