How Does The Program Work?

Applying for the Canada Greener Home Grant is a multi-step process, please follow the below process to register for the initiative and book your pre-retrofit EnerGuide Evaluation

  1. Register for the Canada Greener Homes Grant
Registration for the Greener Home Grant is done through the Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) website. Please click here to register online.
  2. Book your pre-retrofit EnerGuide Evaluation
During the Grant process, you will be required to complete two EnerGuide evaluations; a pre and post-retrofit evaluation. These evaluations are completed by NRCan registered energy advisors.

When you register, you will search using your postal code and select a service organization in your area. Once you choose your service organization and request your evaluation, you will be contacted by an energy advisor to set up your pre-retrofit evaluation appointment. You will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless you continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.

  3. Plan, Document and Complete Your Home Retrofits
Now that you have completed the pre-retrofit evaluation and your energy advisor has provided you with the required documents, it is time to decide which retrofits you’ll complete.

Only retrofits recommended by your energy advisor are eligible for reimbursement. Your recommended retrofits will be listed in your Renovation Upgrade Report and the online portal. The recommended retrofits are prioritized by:
    • your potential energy savings
    • the life expectancy of your home’s components
    • the interactions among the components in your home
    • your potential renovation plans
    • the cost

For information on the most common energy retrofits you can make in your home, please click here.
  4. Book Your Post-Retrofit Evaluation and Apply For Reimbursement

Once you have completed your retrofits, you are ready to book your post-retrofit evaluation and request reimbursement.
Please note: Only retrofit work done after December 1, 2020, that includes both the pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation can qualify for a grant. Evaluations completed before December 1st, 2020 are not eligible for reimbursement. You will be required to undertake at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor in their report to be reimbursed.

For information on how to apply for reimbursement, visit the NRCAN Green Homes Grant website, by clicking here.
  5. Receive Your Reimbursement
As the final step in the process, once the program officers have completed a review of your file and recommended a grant amount, you will be prompted to go into the program portal to confirm your grant total to receive your reimbursement.

What Can I Claim?

  1. Your pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide Evaluations
You will be reimbursed for the cost of the pre-and post-retrofit evaluations up to a maximum of $600. Both evaluations are required under the initiative for reimbursement. You will need to complete at least one of the retrofits that are both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor in their report to be reimbursed. You will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless you continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.
  2. Part of your Completed Home Retrofits
If you are eligible for the Greener Homes Grant, you could receive a total reimbursement of up to $5,000 for select retrofits. You may choose to do more than one of the eligible retrofits but in all cases, the maximum reimbursement will not exceed $5,000 total.
