Waterloo North Hydro Receives Gold Award in Utility Safety

Waterloo North Hydro’s (WNH) commitment to safety and wellness has earned the utility two national awards.

The utility was awarded Gold for the 2020 Canada’s Safest Utilities and Electrical Employer Award, and the Excellence Award in the category of Best Wellness and Psychological Safety Program from Canada’s Safest Employers.  The awards were presented during a virtual gala on October 22.

“Safety and mental wellness is embedded in everything we do,” said WNH’s President and CEO Rene Gatien. “We are pleased to receive these awards in recognition of our ongoing commitment to safety, mental health, and the well-being of our employees.”

WNH’s continued commitment to safety has made it an industry leader. The utility has recorded six consecutive years with zero-lost time injuries and employees received more than 3,400 hours of training last year on a variety of subjects, including communication, technical proficiency, and mental health awareness training. Additionally, the utility routinely shares important safety tips and news items with all employees through posters, internal video screens, and regular health and wellness updates. The utility is also committed to public electrical safety education through two award-winning school programs - the School Electrical Safety presentation program and the Electrical Safety Poster Contest, which provide valuable education to young people in the community.

Mental well-being and psychological safety are also key areas of focus for WNH. The utility created a corporate wellness program in 2010 and the program has grown to include an expanded emphasis on mental wellbeing. Employees are trained in mental health awareness including many who have completed Mental Health First Aid. WNH holds several mental health awareness campaigns throughout the year including Bell Let’s Talk Day, education from WNH’s Wellness consultant, and the Movember movement.

Canada’s Safest Employer Awards were launched in 2011 to recognize companies from across Canada with outstanding accomplishments in promoting the health and safety of their employees. Awards are presented in 10 industry-specific categories, ranging from hospitality to mining and natural resources. Winners are selected based on a number of occupational health and safety elements, including employee training, OHS management, incident investigations, emergency preparedness, and other health and safety initiatives.

This marks the second consecutive year WNH has been honoured by Canada’s Safest Employers. In 2019, the utility, WNH received a Gold Award in the Psychological Safety category and a Silver Award in the Utilities category.
